Foreign & Import Car Repair

Foreign & Import Car Repair

At Independent Motors, we work on many makes and models. This includes import vehicles.

What is an Import Vehicle?

An import vehicle is any vehicle that is brought into a country from another country. Imports tend to be spoken of interchangeably with foreign cars, but that's not always correct. While import vehicles are foreign, not all foreign vehicles are imports. This is because import status is typically determined by the country in which the vehicle's manufacturing was completed. Many Asian and European car companies have manufacturing plants in countries across the world to serve a larger audience (and for that matter, American companies do, too), so if the vehicle's country of assembly is non-US and it is in the United States, it is an import.

On the other hand, a foreign car refers to any vehicle that originates from an automaker based outside of the country, regardless of how it arrived. For example, the Japanese brand Honda has a manufacturing plant in Alabama. If your purchase a Honda that was manufactured in the United States, you have a foreign car (because Honda is a Japanese brand) but not an import (because the vehicle was manufactured here).

In contrast, if you purchase a Honda that was manufactured in Mexico but sold by a US dealer, the car is both foreign and an import.

Many motorists don't think about checking their vehicle's country of assembly. You may be surprised to learn that some well-known domestic brands will import cars made at manufacturing plants in other countries. In other words, you might not realize you are driving an import when you purchase from a domestic brand.
