Top Ford Repair Issues

Every Ford has its personality, strengths and weaknesses. As a result, we’re experts in identifying and making some of the most common Ford service repairs.

  1. Squeaking sound or grinding feel when you brake – it’s probably time to change the brake pads. This problem is an easy fix, but make sure your rotors are checked to prevent future damage when they replace your brake pads.
  2. Rough engine idling – rough idling could be caused by an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) sensor malfunction, causing the EGR valve not to close entirely.
  3. Sputtering or misfiring of the engine and check engine light on – chances are it’s from an excessive spark plug gap, causing an ignition coil failure. This problem is fixed by replacing failed ignition coils, spark plugs, and coil boots.
  4. Spark plug ejection from cylinder head – spark plug may get ejected from the cylinder head, causing damage to the spark plug hole threads. Ford has released a technical service bulletin about this problem, and if under warranty, Ford recommends a truck repair that includes cylinder replacement. If that is not an option, they advise a thread insert repair.
  5. Smell oil after running your engine, specifically on the passenger side – the problem may be an oil leak from the head gasket. The smell is from oil leaking out onto the starter. As a result, you may need to replace the head gasket.
  6. Transmission slipping or not shifting smoothly – the transmission in the line of Ford Explorers may need regular maintenance and are prone to replacement.
  7. Engine idling roughly, hesitation to accelerate, and even engine stalling on the Ford Expedition with the Triton V8 – the mass airflow sensor (MAF) is prone to fail. It is commonly diagnosed as a faulty component when these issues arise.
  8. Spark plugs in the Ford Expedition can be tough to remove – Ford has issued a service bulletin (08-7-6) to address this issue, including a recommended procedure for removing the plugs. Failure to follow the recommended procedure can result in more spark plugs breaking off in the cylinder head.
  9. The heater stopped blowing warm air – several issues have been reported. Still, the problem often revolves around the failure of one of the blend air door actuators. Anytime the heater stops working, it’s best to check the basics, too, like the coolant level, thermostat, and coolant flow through the heater core.
  10. Engine ticking type noise due – a ticking noise may develop from the engine due to a warped exhaust manifold. Damaged exhaust manifolds will require replacement to correct this issue.

FORD REPAIRS & COSTS: Repairs can be costly, especially if the recommended maintenance has been neglected. FORD PARTS: We generally use original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts ONLY if cost-efficient. Otherwise, we’ll source an equally durable aftermarket part. We’ll help you save money this way!

Ford repair advice needed?

Searching the Internet, combing through car guides and talking to Ford car owners with differing opinions, information and advice can be frustrating. That’s why we’ve done the work for you!

Take a peek at some of the most frequently asked questions that Ford owners ask about their vehicles regarding repairs and maintenance.

A: If your Check Engine light is on or flashing, then your engine is most likely misfiring and it needs attention. Many Ford engines use coil on plug type ignition and the coil boots need to be replaced with the spark plugs at regular service intervals.

A: If your car or truck is an automatic it could likely be that the software for the transmission control module needs to be updated. Ford produces many different models and frequently designs newer, better transmissions. With all these design changes come new problems that can be fixed by simply reprogramming computers to the latest calibrations.

A: It is best to repair your leaks before they cause bigger issues, such as, damage to wire harnesses, catastrophic engine or transmission failure, or poor engine performance. Some of these repairs can be costly while others are quite simple and very affordable.
