Vehicle Inspection & Diagnostic Shop in Boulder, CO

Why Choose Us for Your Vehicle Inspection and Diagnostics?

According to our customers, one of the most frustrating things about getting their vehicle worked on at other shops is when that shop recommends replacing a part and that doesn’t fix the problem or says that they didn’t experience the problem in the first place.

This seems to be the number one complaint with auto repair shops, including Dealers.

At Independent Motors we have rearranged our entire pay structure to help eliminate this problem. No one is paid commission so we don’t do short cuts on inspections and diagnostics. We stay with the problem until we’ve figured it out.

We also perform a free inspection with almost every oil change. This way you won’t break down and become stranded when you least expect it.

Highly Experienced Technicians

Many shops can replace a worn component but accurately performing inspections and diagnosing is what separates the best from the rest. When performing inspections, it’s all about what to look for especially what’s pertinent to that specific make and model. This takes many years of experience specializing in those makes.

Diagnoses can be even more complicated since in addition to a lot of experience it can require sophisticated equipment and vast amounts of technical support. Last year we spent over $9,000 on technical subscriptions alone. At independent Motors we have some of the very best diagnosticians and are very proud of them.

Do you have inspections and diagnosing repair questions?

A: This can be complicated since sometimes it’s a process where multiple problems have to be addressed before the ultimate fix has been achieved. But sometimes shops “throw parts at the problem” in the hope it fixes it. In this case you should not be liable for the procedure unless it was made very clear to you that you are the one taking this gamble. Generally, it’s best to ask if the recommended repair is going to fix the problem before authorizing it. Then see what the response is. It all comes down to good communications and trust. Every once in a while, our diagnoses is incorrect and when this happens, we take full responsibility for it and don’t ask our customer to pay for our mistake however expensive it is.

A: There is no set price for this, it depends on the problem. Some diagnoses take little time and should be free and some take many hours to figure out. That’s when using very reputable shops with highly experienced Technicians is a big advantage.
A: Parts stores don’t diagnose engine check lights, they read the code and sell you the part that’s most likely associated with the symptom. This is not a diagnosis; it’s a guess at best. Ex; a P0135 code can be considered a bad O2 Sensor, but replacing the part will not fix the problem if the wiring to it is damaged. It would have been more cost effective to properly diagnose it first.
